United Nations Cuts Estimate Deaths of Women and Children in Gaza in Half

The United Nations has revised down its initial estimates of women and children casualties in Israel's conflict in Gaza, shedding light on the reliance on figures provided by Hamas, the militant group.

Initially, the UN reported that out of the 34,735 total casualties in Gaza, over 9,500 were women and more than 14,500 were children. 

A significant reduction

However, a subsequent update on May 8 revealed a significant reduction in these numbers to 4,959 women and 7,797 children among the total 34,844 reported fatalities in Gaza. The UN's casualty figures are derived from data provided by the Gaza Ministry of Health, which is under Hamas control.
