Residents Oust Portland DA Over Soft-on-Crime Policy

Primary results

Portland voters have elected a former Republican as their new district attorney in response to rising crime rates and homelessness, removing incumbent Mike Schmidt and his progressive agenda that was put in place after the 2020 riots.

The competition pitted incumbent Multnomah County district attorney Schmidt against moderate candidate Nathan Vasquez, a former deputy of Schmidt. Local station KPTV declared Vasquez the winner as primary results unfolded.
