Victory for Christians

A federal judge ruled that the Biden administration cannot compel Christian employers and healthcare providers to cover transgender surgeries and procedures, as it would violate their religious beliefs.

Judge Traynor sided with the Christian Employers Alliance (CEA), which had sued over the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission and Department of Health and Human Services’ interpretation of anti-discrimination laws as requiring coverage of gender transition services.

The lawsuit, filed by the Christian Employers Alliance in October 2021, contested the interpretation of Title VII of the Civil Rights Act by the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) and the Department of Health and Human Services, particularly regarding the requirement for employers to cover transgender surgeries. At the heart of the legal dispute was the contention that the Christian groups should be protected under religious liberty provisions and not be compelled to provide "gender transition services" that are contrary to their sincerely held religious beliefs.
